Hey {{ first name | friends }},

My name is Bill and I’m new here at beehiiv. Here’s some things that have been top of mind for me this week.

:elmofire: Origins

I briefly mentioned this during the All Hands, but it made me so happy to see that elmofire is used as frequently as it is at beehiiv. At Mailchimp, there were only a small number of other team members that would react in tandem with me with elmofire. When I left Mailchimp, I told one of my co-workers I would be passing him the “elmo torch”. Once I got Slack access and saw how widely it’s used here, I knew I found my people.

With that being said, I thought it would be fun to include a brief history of how elmofire came into existence.

elmofire started life as a featured post on cakewrecks.com on November 1st, 2012. There are no records online detailing whether Elmo was an edible component of this cake or a poorly constructed decoration.

Happy 1st birthday!

On Valentine’s Day 2014, a flaming background was added and the burning elmo we know and love emerged from the depths of Tumblr.

In the spirit of our eternally toasty friend, I’ve created some other bad cake/flaming background edits.

Getting headshots is hard

I wanted to have a nice looking picture for my LinkedIn and for the new hire announcement we do on socials. I live in Atlanta, which is a fairly large city. I spent a lot of time researching over the past few days and couldn’t find a business that didn’t have at least one of the below qualities:

  • Lacked a location I could drive to and get headshots done without an appointment

  • Said they could do a quick turnaround but failed to respond when I filled out their contact form

  • Had a calendar for booking headshots with the earliest available dates several weeks from now

  • Had an editing turnaround for the pictures between 5-10 business days

It seems like a business opportunity/market need to me. I’m not in the photography industry and I’m happily employed at beehiiv so I’m doing the following instead:
  1. Hitting up my friend asking if he can be a photographer after work in exchange for a cheesesteak from the food truck near his apartment complex

  2. Driving over to his place

  3. Spending maybe around an hour taking pictures at his apartment complex

  1. Buying the cheesesteak for him from the foodtruck

  2. Getting the pictures I need for around $20 thanks to the power of friendship and my iPhone

I was stumped on what to include using our columns feature, so here’s some pictures of a can of Kroger “Original” seltzer water
